The exchange year is winding down, but the memories are just getting started. May is all about celebrating how far you've come together and making every remaining day count.

Take time to sit down as a family and write notes of gratitude to the people who made this year special. Teachers, coaches, neighbors, friends. Your student will appreciate having something tangible to leave behind, and the people receiving those cards will treasure them.

Gather your favorite photos, ticket stubs, inside jokes and small mementos from the year. Put them together in a scrapbook, a digital album or even a wall collage. It's a meaningful way to reflect on the journey and gives your student something to bring home.

Invite the people who became part of your student's American life. Keep it simple or go all out. The point is to give your student a chance to say goodbye to the community that welcomed them in and made their experience so memorable.
May can feel like a whirlwind of emotions. Your student might swing between excitement about going home and sadness about leaving. That's completely normal. Give them space to feel all of it, and don't be afraid to share your own feelings too. On the practical side, now is the time to help your student return any borrowed items, close out local accounts and start packing early so the final days aren't spent scrambling.
A little planning goes a long way toward a smooth, joyful goodbye.
